This establishment is the most poorly run business I have ever seen and management (Loren) is unbelievably rude and untrustworthy. If could give ZERO stars, that would be the most appropriate! I inquired about a riding lawnmower, a month after my father passed away, and was quoted $1500 from a salesman and another saleswoman working there heard the quote. I was also quoted $2.43 for a pair of tines for my thatcher. When I returned to the store, Loren stated the mower was $1600 and when challenged, he rudely retorted, "I don't care what the other salesman told you. I won't let that mower go for less than $1600!" My Mom and I were shocked and inquired with the sales woman who verified that yes, the salesman had quoted me $1500. The tines, that were originally quoted at $2.43 were now $12.99 according to Loren. Here is the verbatim email response I received from Loren ..... I cannot believe any "businessman" would speak to anyone like this! "Mon, Oct 18, 11:09 AM (8 days ago) to me, Front "This is Loren and we will not honor a quote made by someone who was not a salesman at the time he talked to you and is no longer working here. I am not sure what his number might have included and frankly do not care. His price on the unit might have included a small value for your old mower, we had discussed a possible value for it, but with a blown engine it has no value. The very best price I found on any tines was 10 for $35.00 but whether they fit or no I do not know and am not willing to take a chance on. Either way the price on the mower is $1600 and the tines we can find are 12.99 each (each is a pair)." Loren had also told me they would "take a peak" at my snapper to see what it was worth for trade in value and I verified that there was no charge for this "service" to which he replied "no charge". When my family member went to pick my mower up from the business, Loren insisted that I owed him $48 for a "diagnostic charge" and would not release my mower until it was paid. I spoke to Loren directly and instead of admitting that he told me "no charge", his exact words to me were "you know what? I am going to eat the $48 charge to get you off my back and so I never have to speak to you again!" He then hung up on me. Please do not expect competent or honest service from Steve's Small Engine - management is untrustworthy, unbelievably rude, dishonest, shady, and sneaky!! Do not trust them!
Response from the owner
There isn't much I can add to the exchange. The negotiation repeated itself several times over a period of at least 2 weeks with the same result each time. The client wanted the mower for $1500 (not an unreasonable request given the previous misquote) and the tines for $2.39 each, 8 or 10 pairs required plus install. Both sides of this exchange reached a level of frustration that ended with bringing it to an unsuccessful resolution. The price of the mower had always been $1600. Why the Mechanic, not salesman, quoted $1500 is unknown. I probably should have honored that quote at any rate. The price for the tines was really off the wall. OEM tines are listed at $12.99 and after several attempts to find the ones that the customer claims the mechanic found I was unsuccessful. The lowest price I found for any tines was 10 for $35 and they were not OEM and did not list any dimensions. I was not willing to order an item that I did not know would fit and then be stuck with an item that could not be sold. I did give this customer the location the mechanic was now at and invited them to contact him for the tines he apparently said he found. I also invited them to do their own search and if they wanted we would install what they found. As for the diagnosis fee, I agreed to wave the fee if they elected to purchase a new mower which they did not. This is the arrangement we make with all repair customers. I also agreed to pick their mower up and wave the pick up and delivery charges if their mower was traded in, which it was not but I did not charge them for pick up and delivery. Miss Buege was quite insistent in all exchanges and expected us bend to her desires. Failure to do so was going to result in her dissatisfaction no matter what the outcome and that is why I elected to "eat" the fee and end our business relationship.
