Horrible horrible horrible service! My husband and I went from “Johnson’s is meh; let’s hire someone else,” to actively telling friends and family “never hire them, ever” after receiving a bill for service we didn’t ask for or authorize and the terrible experience we had with the receptionist when inquiring about the bill. We hired Johnson’s last year for a series of lawn treatments and paid upfront for the season. Ultimately, we were unimpressed with the lawn care and hired another local company for this year. Unbeknown to us, Johnson’s is an auto renew lawn care service. If you hired them the previous year, they assume you want to continue service unless you call and cancel - though I don’t recall ever signing a contract agreeing to this. While I can somewhat excuse this business model, the customer service my husband received when he called a few weeks back asking about it is inexcusable. The receptionist rudely told him there was nothing she could do, she doesn’t have time to call everyone and it was his problem that he didn’t call and cancel. My husband is a polite and reasonable man. We would have been okay with a sincere apology and $10 off the bill or at the very least a “let me see if there’s anything I can do and give you a call back” response. Pretty cheap and simple ways, yet to mention customer service 101, to keep unsatisfied customers from completely hating your company. The call ended with my husband letting her know that we would not be recommending Johnson’s to our friends and family and her reply was “do what you gotta do”. I guess this review is just that. There are some great other options for lawn care in Marshalltown - save yourself the trouble and time from dealing with service like this and not to mention subpar lawn treatments.

The “receptionist” you are referring to is an owner of the business. She knows firsthand that it has always been our policy, as it is for many other lawn care businesses and service-based companies, to be a continuous service. We have operated this way for over 20 years and do it as a convenience to our customers, so they do not need to remember to call and sign up each spring. This policy is well communicated. It is printed in red on each invoice we leave on the door when we treat each of the five treatments each season. It is also printed in an annual letter sent out each February before the season begins and even on the outside of the envelope the letter is sent in, should you think it is junk mail and not actually open it. It is not a secret we try and hide. We trust our customers are reading the paperwork we leave for them and have done what we can to communicate this to them. This is not a policy we typically have issues with our customers understanding. We are sorry you missed these communications. All we ever ask of any customer is to call when they wish to change their service package or cancel when you no longer want our services. Without that small bit of communication, we have no way of knowing that service was not wanted. We would never have come to treat the lawn that day if we had that communicated to us. Because of this we cannot see a reason that service should be discounted as the treatment was not in error on our part, it was not part of a sales promotion, no part of the application would have been of less quality or lesser grade materials, and it was applied correctly. This led to an impasse in communication which led the customer to indicate that he would respond by going up and down his street to inform his neighbors that we were a horrible service provider since we would not discount his service. In this case we felt we could not stop him from doing what he was going to do, and the communication ended. This entire situation all could have been avoided with very simple communication that he didn’t wish to use our service this season. Further, our technician who applied the treatment said the customer indicated they were going to switch services but go ahead with the application they were there to do that day and that he would pay for it.
